Skrillex “The Cell”
Overview:
To push the boundaries of live performance, Skrillex set out to create a fully immersive, interactive concert experience powered by real-time animation. The goal: use live 3D avatars that could move with him on stage and react in sync with the music and motion.
What I Did:
-
Developed fully rigged 3D avatars in Unreal Engine with custom materials and look development
-
Integrated Xsens motion capture to stream Skrillex’s live movements into the avatars during the show
-
Designed eight unique avatars projected onto a 15′ x 30′ interactive structure known as “The Skrillex Cell”
-
Collaborated with creative director David Navarro and teams at Production Club and V Squared Labs for environmental integration
Tools Used:
Unreal Engine · Xsens Motion Capture · Cinema 4D · After Effects
Results:
The real-time avatar system brought a living, responsive layer to Skrillex’s performance — blending projection mapping, live mocap, and immersive visuals into a multi-sensory experience. The project helped redefine the limits of stage design and visual interactivity, leaving a lasting impression on audiences and setting a new benchmark for live music tech.
